Do you ever feel like no matter how many storage bins or shelves you buy for your craft room, everything still gets cluttered and disorganized? These custom cabinets were a game-changer for me! Instead of trying to fit all of my supplies into pre-made containers, I was able to design the cabinets specific to my needs. Designing and building this craft room was my first attempt at built-in cabinets, and unfortunately, I hadn’t started my Instagram yet and didn’t document it as well as I would today.
When it comes to designing a beautiful space that works for you, there are several key considerations to keep in mind. First and foremost, think about your specific needs and requirements for this room. This could include things like the types of crafts or activities you’ll be doing, the amount of storage or workspace you’ll need, and any specific layout or organizational preferences you have. Once you have a clear understanding of these things, you can start to think about how to incorporate them into a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing design.
One great strategy for achieving this balance is to focus on elements of the design that are both functional and visually appealing. For example, you might choose storage solutions that are not only practical for organizing supplies, but also feature attractive design details or materials.
This room was previously my son’s bedroom where I added board and batten with a shelf for his hats, trophies, and pictures. To create a craft room, I first needed to demo his bedroom. The built-ins were made using 3/4″ maple plywood. The cabinet doors and drawer fronts were made out of 1/4″ maple plywood and 1×3 pine, and I used pine 1x2s for the face frame. I have since perfected my paint-grade cabinet doors and drawer fronts, and I share those details in my reels and highlights on my Instagram page.
When the time came to add a countertop, I spent hours researching cheap countertop options. After deciding I would have to figure out how to do laminate, I had the idea to just use 3/4″ plywood. Adding trim to the face would make it look thicker, and painting it with a high-gloss white would make it easy to clean. I completed this project a year and a half ago, and the countertop still looks as good as new!
Incorporating subway tile backsplash into your built-ins adds style and sophistication. This peel-and-stick tile was incredibly easy to install, making it a great choice for a DIY project. Adding a backsplash is a good way to spruce up a crafting space without hiring professional help. This is a project that anyone can do. The glossy finish of these tiles adds a modern touch, while reflecting light and creating the illusion of more space. Best of all, this is durable and low maintenance material that can withstand the wear and tear of daily use, ensuring that your craft room stays beautiful for years to come.
Wallpaper is expensive! Using an electronic cutting machine (I use this Silhouette) to cut small circles out of black vinyl, is a fantastic way to achieve a unique, modern, and cheap wallpaper. Whether you choose to create a uniform grid, or a more organic, random arrangement, the result will be an eye-catching accent wall that adds texture, depth, and character to your space. What’s more, the black on white contrast is timeless and versatile, making it an ideal complement to any decor style.
My friend taught me this wallpaper dupe and this project cost me about $15, plus the cost of the white paint.
If you’re looking for a practical and space-saving way to organize your craft room, then using hooks and dowels is a solution. This simple fix allows you to easily hang your wrapping paper and ribbon, and the Q hooks prevent the dowels from sliding off as you pull. This will help keep your supplies organized and easily accessible, while freeing up valuable shelf and drawer space for other crafting materials. Plus, with the added benefit of being able to see all your supplies at a glance, you’ll never have to dig through a tangled mess again.
With innovative design choices, clever storage solutions, and a smart organization strategy, you can take your craft room from cluttered and chaotic, to calm and efficient. This will allow you to focus on what really matters – your creativity.
